Issue no. 20 of the “Corriere Vinicolo” contains an article on °Brix and Maselli’s experience in the refractometric analysis of grapes. A topic which is currently of great interest to the wine sector, highlighting the Italian problem caused by the lack of control and certification schemes for assessing the °Brix in grapes. Unlike other countries, such as the USA, France, Spain or Portugal, Italy has not yet responded to recommendation R 124 issued by the International Organisation for Legal Metrology (OIML) concerning the measurement of the °Brix in must using a refractometer, leaving Italy with no implementation of the International recommendations. A normative void the whole sector needs to think about in order to guarantee better safeguarding of the market.
The capacity to make comparisons with other countries is in fact fundamental in a system which is becoming increasingly more globalized. This is why Maselli Misure for years has been active in the development of refractometric instruments and systems in line with international standards, as shown by the approval obtained from the French Ministry of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Department of Food and Agriculture in Canada.
